Stonedust-Bucket in the News Excerpt from “Circling the Square”
If you've never attended a bocce ball tournament, you just don't know what you're missing. You should really try to become friendly with George and Marian Saluto so maybe you, too, will be invited to the next very exclusive Stonedust-Bucket Memorial Tournament. It's so exclusive that the invitation says "the tournament is open to any extended family or friends that you decide will add to the enjoyment of the game." This year, I saw two former Danvers folks I haven't seen for quite a while - Barbara and Ed Bell. Ed, many of you may recall, was a member of the Danvers School Committee. A news director for WHDH-TV, Ed then went to Virginia as part of the Associated Press. Now, he and Barbara are living in Marblehead. Their daughter, Andrea, a Danvers High grad, is a lawyer in Washington, D.C. It was really special seeing the Bells again. *** I had such a wonderful excuse not to show off my lack of athletic ability - because of my rotator cuff, I couldn't participate. I have to congratulate Dee DeCoff, who never seems to get the credit, for racking up the most points for her team. Unfortunately, they didn't win 'cause some of the others just didn't measure up. I really can't tease Thom anymore for his lack of skill, though, especially since he won the gold medal for coming closest to the wine bottle - even though it was empty. That was with a bocce ball, of course. *** I also have to commend the duo of Jan and Dan Bennett, who won a gold medal for their win. Runners up were silver medallists Carolyn and Claudio Cappuccio, neighbors of the Salutos. *** I think Theresa Stablewski should have won a prize for best form, bocce form, that is. She sure seemed like a winner when she rolled that ball down the court. Oh, well, at least she looked the part. By the way, if anyone sees a for sale sign on Theresa's Scarlet Lane home, she assures me that she's only selling the house and not moving out of town. She and her husband, Todd, will be boasting a new address in Old Salem Village. *** Home
