Circling the Square

George Saluto, left, and Frank Lentini with his appreciation plaque.

If you’re lucky enough to know George and Marian Saluto, you probably have attended or been invited to one of their semi-annual Stonebucket Memorial Bocce Tournaments aka the Bocce Ball and Bar-B-Q. I mean, this is serious stuff with Bocce Bosses - Frank Lentini, Tom DeCoff, Bob Young, Norm St. Cyr and George - scorekeepers, winning teams and Marie Powell as the gatekeeper, meaning she’s the one who collects the tab. Marie has been doing her job since it all began and since she’s so good at it, it seems she’s inherited a lifetime position. Just so everyone knows the seat is hers, the Salutos have provided Marie with her own bench and a plaque with her name on it. In fact, George has found a new talent - creating plaques and signs and he gave out lots. Winning team, by the way, was made up of Bob and Mary Young and George and Marian Saluto - and that’s legitimate. I have to tell you, though, I was totally disillusioned. For years I thought Tiffany DeCoff’s incredible athletic talent was inherited from her dad, Tom, an avid sports fan. Not so. Tiffany and a former college friend, also a teacher, carried their Bocce foursome and the women were awesome.

We’re not going to tell Tiffany what to do, but since Tom only scored one point, maybe it’s time to put family loyalty aside and pick another teammate?

An eager crew of guys pulls the pork that's been on the barbeque all day for the hungry crowd at the Bocce Tournament. Clockwise from front, Chris Sullivan, Joseph Saluto, Skip Corning, David Saluto, and Tommy DeCoff. Hecklers are Claudio Cappuccio and Harriet Chihlas.
