Stonedust-Bucket in the News

Excerpt from “Circling the Square”
by Myrna Fearer
Danvers Herald, July 22, 2004

I know there are lots of you out there who have been complaining that this summer wasn't warm enough. Well, that all changed this week. It's been very hot and humid. For those of you who wished for warmer weather, I'm reminding you of the old Chinese saying, "Be careful what you wish for as it just may come true." Well, folks, I think it has. As for me, I wouldn't be upset if it stayed in the 70s most of the time - and without any humidity.

I don't know why so many people tell me they envy my social life. I don't think I go to any more places or events than most of you; I just talk about them more. Last Saturday night was George Saluto's annual Stonedust Bucket Memorial Bocce tournament. All it takes to be invited is knowing the Salutos, any of the Bocce Bosses or their friends. In fact, it's you all come, and it's lots of fun.

One thing you can't say about the tournament is that it's political. It's actually politically correct. Taking their turn on the bocce court were Selectman Stan Svensson and Dana Foye, his supporter. Gardner Trask, who lost the selectman's race by a small number of votes, was also there. I guess all's fair in love, war, politics and bocce.

If anyone noticed that Gardner Trask was alone, please, let's not start any rumors. His wife, Trish, was home nursing a fractured foot from a fall.

One thing about bocce, there are the really serious players and there are those of us who get eliminated in the first round. That's me. This was my first year playing; I've always had an excuse. Last year, it was because my shoulder was healing after surgery (you can only use that excuse just so long). So, even though I pay, I don't play. This year, I tried my luck, partnering with Marie Powell. We didn't win. But, Tiffany DeCoff and Lauren Sullivan did. The athletic duo came in first along with Joan and John Martin, formerly of Summer Street. They now live in Newburyport in a condo converted from a firehouse. Part of their address is Hose #7 (truly).

George Saluto and his bocce bosses take their game seriously. Someone even measures distances with a yard stick. Now, there's a junior boss - George and Marian Saluto's baby grandson, Thomas. Gosh Tommy's dad, Joseph, never got any recognition, and he's a great pork puller (one of the eats treats). We're not exactly saying that this is a sexist group, but I did notice that Tommy's cousin, Grace, David Saluto's 2-year old daughter, Grace, never made it either. As a matter of fact, there are no women bocce bosses - the wives are called Bocce Babes. Maybe they should picket like the Boston Police. (See more of David Sokol's great photos next week.)
